Our Process

General Meetings

Friday mornings during each academic term, the Group meets in Austin Hall. The meeting begins with performance updates provided by the portfolio managers, followed by sector updates from each of the sector leaders (general management). After sector updates, analysts provide stock presentations, recommending either a buy, sell, or hold of an equity. These stock presentations, commonly referred to as "pitches," can be for an existing position or an initiating position. Following each pitch, the Group holds a Q&A session. Each member of the Group then votes on the pitch, including justifications for their decision. Portfolio managers are then responsible for trade execution.

During the 2022-2023 academic year, OSIG members, Derek Dang and Ryan Hogan created an external website demonstrating our stock holdings. To learn about our specific holdings in each of our portfolios and sectors, visit the site below:

Financial Modeling and Research Report

OSIG utilizes several different valuation methods to calculate the intrinsic value of an equity:

  • Discounted Cash Flow
  • Comparables
  • Historical P/E
  • Residual Income

After completing relevant financial modeling, analysts complete a full research report on their respected company. These reports include an investment thesis based on a calculated intrinsic value, an overall financial analysis of the company, and an assessment of industry forces.

Example Materials

The Oregon State Investment Group is a prestigious group that requires 40-60 hours a term. To get an understanding of what is required as a new analyst, as well as how we present our reports, review our 2022-2023 "Best Pitch" report won by Parker Meredith, pitching a buy for Albemarle Corporation.
